Mystery resolved surrounding the sale of L’Incomparable

Further details have been revealed about the record-breaking sale of L’Incomparable, the world’s most expensive necklace.

In January of 2013, Lebanese designer Mouawad Jewelers sold a necklace featuring the largest flawless diamond in the world, the 407-carat fancy color yellow L’Incomparable.

The buyer, according to a report from Luxury Launches, was Nita Ambani the wife of billionaire businessman Mukesh Ambani. The necklace was purchased for $US55 million ($AU82 million).

Ambani then gifted the necklace to her daughter-in-law, Shloka Mehta, when she married her son Akash Ambani in 2019.

“Beyond its status as a touching keepsake, the necklace is a stunning creation on its own merits. The massive diamond is connected to a network of 18-carat rose gold branches set with a further 229 carats of white diamonds,” writes Demetrius Simms of Robb Report.

“Since 1990, Mouawad has been honored by Guinness World Records an impressive five times. Its most recent induction is The Flower of Eternity Jewelry Coffer, the world’s most expensive jewelry box, set with 542 carats of white and yellow diamonds.”

He adds: “And with a history like that, you can only wonder what record-breaking collectible they might come up with next.”

What happened to the necklace following the purchase in 2013 is unclear; however, L’Incomparable was later re-cut into the 303-carat Golden Canarywhich was sold at auction in December.

The diamond was discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 1980s as an 890-carat rough.
