James Andrews

Works at: James Andrews Jeweller

Age: 43

Years in trade: 27 years

Training: Jewellery apprenticeship

First job: Chris Andrews Jewellers

Other Qualifications: Matrix Gold and Rhino Gold CAD designer

SIGNATURE PIECE:

DIAMOND AND PLATINUM BANGLE

The customer came to me with the five large diamonds that are at the centre of the bangle. The diamond split band worked out perfectly and then came the construction of the hinged box clasp and then the magical ‘8’ clasp ensuring extra security. The remaining smalls were supplied and set by myself. I absolutely loved the outcome and it fit perfectly for the client while showcasing the diamonds. That’s what a true bespoke is – a handmade piece showcasing high skill and finesse.

Favourite gemstone:

Spinel.

Favourite metal:

Yellow gold and platinum.

Favourite tool:

Saw frame.

Best new tool discovery:

Nothing I can really think of – old tools are always new tools when they’re well respected.

Best part of job:

My customers.

Worst part of job:

Nothing at all – seriously.

Best tip from a jeweller:

There’s too many to list, but many thanks to my father – Chris Andrews – and my fellow jewellers Tony Walker and Dan Shadwick for everything they’ve taught me. Much respect.

Best tip to a jeweller:

Always be honest, and never be lazy.

Biggest health concern on the bench:

Eyesight!

Love jewellery because:

It’s genius creative art if you’re talented.
