October SPOTLIGHT:

Carlo Romeo loves seeing the new pieces he designs come to life, particularly when they’ve been created from something as simple as a lump of gold.

SIGNATURE PIECE:

(EMBRACEMENT COCKTAIL RING)

This 18-carat yellow gold dress ring with 141 pave-set diamonds totalling 2.82 carats and weighing in at 16.7 grams was inspired by the arms of a mother embracing her child. This is one of the most complicated CAD designs I have done in terms of curves and the size of the diamonds.

FAVOURITE GEMSTONE: Fancy colour pink diamonds, it still amazes me every day how rare and valuable they really are.

FAVOURITE METAL: 18-carat yellow gold.

FAVOURITE TOOL: Asiga 3D Printer.

BEST NEW TOOL DISCOVERY: Matrix Gold software.

BEST PART OF THE JOB: Being able to complete the whole job from start to finish inside my workshop. I CAD the design, print the wax, set up a tree, cast the piece, clean assemble and set the gemstones and there it is!

WORST PART OF THE JOB: The value (or lack thereof) placed on the work a jeweller does.

BEST TIP FROM A JEWELLER: You get what you pay for. Made in Australia – it’s really worth it!

BEST TIP TO A JEWELLER: Choose your customers wisely.

BIGGEST HEALTH CONCERN ON THE BENCH: We never really understood in the early years the dangers associated with the chemicals we use and our environment. The difficulty in adapting modern-day health and safety measures to our profession and being able to recover the costs associated with this.

LOVE JEWELLERY BECAUSE: I love seeing the new pieces I design come to life, particularly when they’ve been created from something as simple as a lump of gold.
