Major international jewellery retailer Malabar Gold & Diamonds has opened its first showroom in Australia with a high-profile launch.
The Indian retailer was established in 1993 and operates more than 340 stores across 13 countries. The Sydney showroom is in Harris Park, by the Little India Precinct.
Described as the ‘largest jewellery showroom in Sydney’, 18-carat and 22-carat gold collections are on display, along with diamond and gemstone pieces. The showroom also features a custom jewellery designing facility.
The showroom was launched with legendary Australian cricketer Brett Lee in attendance as a special guest.
Malabar Group chairman MP Ahammed said the launch was evidence of the blossoming trade relationship between Australia and India.
“This is also a great success story leveraging the strong trade relationship and recent bilateral free trade agreement between Australia and India,” he said.
“Our growth plan in Australia will lead to significant investments into jobs and the local economy in Australia over the next few years.”
In December 2022, the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement passed both houses of Australia’s Parliament.
The agreement provides Australian businesses preferential access to Indian gemstones and jewellery, making it easier for Australian retailers to obtain jewellery from Indian manufacturers.
Ahammed continued: “I am grateful to our customers, management team members, shareholders, and other stakeholders for helping us move one step closer towards our goal of being crowned as the world’s number one jewellery retailer.”
Malabar Gold & Diamonds plans to launch showrooms in New Zealand, South Africa, Egypt, Bangladesh, and Turkey as part of an expansion plan.
