Online marketplace eBay is celebrating the expansion of its luxury watches division since the launch of the authenticity guarantee program in 2021.
The scheme involves the assessment of watches sold in the UK for £1,500 ($AU2,850) on their way between seller and buyer.
This inspection and verification by independents aims to provide extra confidence for customers purchasing watches on eBay. The piece is also checked in the event of a return, adding security for sellers.
“Since launching authenticity guarantee for watches on eBay, what is powerful to see is that we are witnessing sellers of all sizes, from individual watch sellers to professional dealers and retailers, all benefiting equally from the service,” Keith Metcalfe director of luxury told WatchPro.
“We are delighted that our service is building momentum within the watch category, and we hope this will only continue to increase as we innovate for our buyers and sellers.”
Metcalfe said the most notable increase has been in seller and listing numbers on those watches priced at over £5,000 ($AU9,520).
The most expensive watch to use the authenticity guarantee program was a Patek Philippe Aquanaut Blue Anniversary Men’s White Gold 2019, which was listed for £93,000 ($AU177,160).
