A fancy-intense blue diamond was the top seller at the Sotheby’s New York Important Jewels auction, fetching US$1.4 million ($AU2.08 million) on 13 September.

The ring featured a 2.42-carat cut-cornered rectangular mixed-cut VS1-clarity diamond and was sold within its pre-sale estimate.

An unmounted, pear-shaped, 10.21-carat, D-flawless diamond was sold within its pre-sale estimate and returned $US819,000 ($AU1.2 million).

Meanwhile, an 8.58-carat oval-shaped, D-colour, internally flawless diamond went for $US554,400 ($AU821,800) slightly above the pre-sale estimate.

Another notable piece was a 5.34-carat light blue marquise-shaped VVS1-clarity diamond ring, which sold for $US554,400 ($AU821,800), more than double the estimated return.

A 9.19-carat emerald Bulgari ring surrounded by diamonds also exceeded expectations, selling for $US428,400 ($AU635,028) while a 4.52-carat pear-shaped, light pink, VS2-clarity diamond ring, returned $US403,200 ( $AU597,673).

Pear-shaped diamonds in Hong Kong

Sotheby’s has revealed the headline pieces for the 7 October Magnificent Jewels sale in Hong Kong.

A pair of pear-shaped D-flawless diamonds are expected to return $US7 million ($AU10.44 million). The diamonds are 31.46 and 30 carats respectively.

Prior to the Magnificent Jewels auction, Sotheby’s will hold a stand-alone sale for the Williamson Pink Star. Internally flawless, the cushion-cut, 11.15-carat, fancy vivid pink diamond will carry a presale estimate of $US21 million ($AU30.88 million).

That sale will take place on 5 October.
