Canadian authorities have launched an investigation after a container holding almost 3,600 pounds (1,633 kilograms) of gold vanished from Toronto Pearson International Airport.
The Toronto Sun has reported that the gold stolen was valued at approximately $US15 million ($AU22.4 million); however, other sources suggest the value is closer to $US100 million ($AU149.5 million).
The report suggested the theft was likely linked to organized crime, citing an unnamed police source. Other valuable items were also taken.
Investigators believe the heist occurred on 17 April. Peel Regional Police Inspector Stephen Duivesteyn said the investigation would explore “all avenues” and described the incident as isolated and rare.
“Our goal is to solve this theft. We want to solve it. I cannot provide exact details. We do not consider this a public safety matter,” he said.
“We’re three days in, so our investigators have their eyes open to all avenues. We’re kind of keeping a broad outlook on it, so we’re looking from all angles on how this item was stolen.”
The Toronto Pearson International Airport is Canada’s busiest airport. It’s believed thieves accessed the public side of a warehouse which is leased to a third party outside the ‘primary security line’.
