A pair of fancy vivid orange-yellow diamond earrings will be the headline act of an upcoming Christie’s auction in New York.

Known as the California Sunset Diamonds, the earrings feature oval mixed-cut diamonds weighing 12.2 and 11.9 carats. The auction is scheduled for 6 December, and the earrings are expected to return approximately $US12 million ($AU18.43 million).

The event will also feature jewellery from well-known designs, including Cartier, Harry Winston, Graff, and Van Cleef & Arpels.

The sale of gemstones from private collections will be of particular interest, including pieces owned by filmmaker Ivan Reitman, billionaire philanthropist Julian Robertson, and heiress Margaret Thompson Biddle.

Christie’s will also host a digital auction, Jewels Online, which begins on 28 November and concludes on 8 December.

It’s been a productive few weeks in jewellery and gemstone auctions. The sale of the Bleu Royal diamond returned $US43.8 million ($AU68.39 million) at Christie’s, while a 20-carat pink diamond fetched $US13.2 million ($AU20.51 million) at Phillips’.

Further, the sale of Viennese royal jewellery discovered in a bank vault in Germany returned $US10.7 million ($AU16.45 million) in Geneva.
